Tom & Laura have a really neat story. Both Tom & Laura are completely deaf. However I was able to communicate to both of them very easily. They both can read lips really well. They can also speak, and they are really good at it. They have the ability to hear with their cochlear implant (Not always well, but still the ability is there) Which is pretty impressive. They communicate also with sign language and sign to each other constantly. Which you will see in some of their photos in this blog!!! While doing their session this past Saturday ( in 90 degree plus weather, might I add, and in Fall apparel too! Such troopers…) It was obvious that God brought these two together. They were laid back. Loving each other’s company, and having fun. It was just a bonus that someone was there to capture it. I was curious to how they had met. So I asked Laura about it. Here’s their story…
Tom is from the St. Louis area. He went to the University of South Florida for 5 years. One summer while he was in college, he took an internship at Gallaudet University in their Molecular Genetics Lab. The internship was on Connexin 26 deafness. Laura first met Tom the summer of 2012 while he was on his internship at Gally. (Gally is a nickname for Gallaudet). She had been a student there for 3 years already studying Family and Child services. They became friends and hung out often. After that summer was over, Tom’s internship was done and he headed back to the University of South Florida to finish up his schooling. He had 2 more years left to go. Tom & Laura kept in touch for the first couple of months.. but then the long distance drew them apart. Laura finished her schooling at Gallaudet in 2013 and stayed in the Washington D.C. area for work until she moved back home in 2015. One day in May of 2016 she decided to visit a church in Missouri. She thought it was a normal Sunday morning. But when she walked in, Tom was there. They were shocked to see each other and had no idea they both moved back to the Midwest the year before. They reconnected and something that was there before was rekindled and now they are getting MARRIED!!!
I am so excited to share with you the pictures from their engagement session. Their LOVE speaks volumes. You can just tell how much they mean to each other in their photographs. I am so excited that I get to be part of their BIG DAY!
